greenhouse is not a dream house!

Yes, but it won’t happen by itself !

Greenhouses come in all shapes, sizes and prices, ideally you’ll buy the largest greenhouse you can afford and take care of.

Before you buy /build a greenhouse you should plan and think about a few details like; What will be the location ? What is layout going to be ? framing, flooring, windows, etc, etc,

The location :

Avoid placing greenhouse near trees that completely bloc the sun throughout the day time.

I have chosen a part of my garden terrace and part of my border which is free from big trees-thus there is enough sun light…

Build or buy :

I have choosen a local company Royal Well-Holland which gives a good service and easy to order separate small articles. Since 2012 I lost two glasses with bad storms and ordered new ones. You buy a greenhouse ones, but spares & repairs continue each year.

I ordered Royal Well -Popular 86 – alu frame with safety glass-

257 x 193cm 124-195 cm h, 5m2 surface

My greenhouse is built on soil, I can grow straight into it, watering and tending plants as necessary, working from a central path.

Amateur gardeners- which I am- might be surprised to discover the complications associated with small-scale greenhouse. Compact buildings feature intense temperature shift, which can make climate control challenging.

There comes choosing vents/windows !

All greenhouses need vents to allow hot, rising air to move out and cool air to move in, especially in summer. One or more vents are necessary with tempered glass or automatic opener…I have safety glass vents with an automatic opener; it opens and closed itself with temperature changing. It regulates greenhouse temperatures and staying open in the summer months will help with air circulation and creating better growing conditions.

I never plan on growing vegetables during the winter months, that is why I didn’t spend any money for heaters.

Watering system

I don’t have any watering system in my greenhouse. Dryness can be an issue during summer months. I prefer to give manual water to my plants/vegetables. I like to set the soil with the lighter flows of water.

When you are watering, it is also important; sometimes it seems obvious; plants are dry, they need water. Plants like water, but they don’t want to be wet. Excessive moisture in the greenhouse can lead to fungal diseases, as well as creating an environment for certain pests to thrive.

I check local weather when I consider watering. My ultimate goal is that at the end of the day, the plants are dry going into the evening. If the day is going to be sunny, I put on the water first thing in the morning, while the sun is still low in the sky. This will give the plants the chance to absorb the water before the sun is high. It is possible for an intense sun to turn that drop of water on a leaf into a little lens and cause burning on the leaf. If I am away during the day, I will come back and water my plants .

Greenhouse shade cloth, shelves and the other articles can be ordered any moment if needed.

Simply clean your greenhouse at least once or twice a year with a scrub brush and hot soapy water.

The great thing about cleaning a greenhouse is there is no need for fancy chemicals. You’d be surprised how quickly tree pollen, algae and fungus can build up on both your interior and exterior window /doors.

Greenhouse cleaning time is also the perfect opportunity to clean out all your greenhouse pots and trays as well preparing for the next season.
